“Influence” call for artists
“Social networks are intricate things of beauty. They are so elaborate and so complex—and so ubiquitous, — that one has to wonder what purpose they serve. Why are
we embedded in them? How do they form? How do they work? How do they affect us?”
- Nicholas Christakis (“connected”)
Errata gallery is seeking artists to begin a process based art project . Inspired by the idea of how real life social networks influence our ideas, emotions, and behaviors, “Influence” is an experiment to create a visual representation of how we’re affected by the people we know, their friends’, their friends’ friends, their friend’s friend’s neighbor, their friend’s friend’s neighbor’s brother’s girlfriend’s co-worker’s second cousin … etc. etc..
The project will work similar to a chain letter but without the creepy pyramid format or threats of bad luck . I need to find some artists who are willing to start the project by beginning a painting or drawing (will have precut wood provided) and then pass it on to another artist to work on it, who will in turn pass it along to another artist they know. The artwork will be passed around in this manner for the month of February. There are no limits or minimums of how many people it can pass to, as long as it’s returned to the gallery or scheduled for pickup by the 1st of March. It could be 2 or it could be 20. There will also be a few pieces sent out with no set deadline, only instructions to return them when they are “finished”. Information and instructions will be included on the backs.
The final pieces will be displayed at Errata Gallery for the first Thursday opening in March, and remain up throughout the month. All artwork will be available for sale at a fixed price, with 90% of the proceeds divided among the artists. (10% will help offset costs of promotional materials etc.) Keep in mind that this is meant to be an experiment and hopefully a fun, thought provoking, and inspirational project. A final piece from a collaboration of 10 artists that sells for $100 will be a whopping $9 per person, so it’s obviously not gonna make anyone rich. Keep this in mind when working on the piece. Ideally people will be interested in the idea and excited to work on it and keep it going, but investing a couple hours or so and then passing it along to someone else is fine. Likewise, taking 2 weeks to accurately convey your style is also fine, but please remember that work needs to be back at the gallery on the 1st of March. There are no limitations on medium, format, etc. If you want to include photography, collage, or 3d elements you’re welcome to do so.
There will be a space on the back to include your contact info / website / etc. Participating artists will be given credit for their work on display and mentioned in press and show promotions. Because of the nature of the project, please realize that direct evidence of your own work may be lost within the collaboration, but that it will undoubtedly influence the layers of work above it. Also please take into consideration the possibility that some work will not find it’s way back to the gallery. All finished work we do receive will become property of the gallery. Work that does not sell during the show may remain on display in other parts of the gallery or shown in other exhibition spaces as the curator sees fit.
Materials will be available for pickup in the gallery on February 1st from 3 – 10 pm. Return date is scheduled for Monday March 1st from 5 -10pm
